Jean de La Roque (1661–1745) published an account of a journey through Palestine based on the handwritten memoirs of Chevalier d’Arvieux, who had lived in the Levant, in Sidon, from 1653 to 1665. He was later sent to Tunis to negotiate a treaty that resulted in the liberation of 380 slaves. These memoirs, later revisited by Father Labat, provide numerous details on the customs, traditions, and religion of the Bedouins. D’Arvieux also describes his mission to Mount Carmel in 1664, along with an account of the Red Sea and an extensive general description of Arabia by Sultan Ismael Abulfeda. The work is decorated with a frontispiece and 4 hors-texte plates, including 1 folded view, engraved by Jan Wandelaar.
