« The Antwerp publisher Jan (I) van Keerbergen (1586-1624?) produced in 1601 a competitive edition of the Epitome. The text was written by Michel Coignet (1549-1623), who is also known for his maritime works, translated from the works by Petrus de Medina.
All the small maps in this edition are new. The contents are based on the 1601 edition of the Epitome (332:13), even the additamentum with 13 maps is copied, instead of inserting the map at their appropriate places. They are better engraved than the original maps by Galle, and all have latitudes and longitudes in their borders. They were engraved by Ambrosius and Ferdinand Arsenius.
For this edition, Van Keerbergen had a title page engraved. It shows an architectural façade with personifications of ‘Geographia and ‘Hydrographia to the left and right, a globe pair and a compass at the bottom, and at the top seven medallions with portraits of geographers (with their names: Strabo, Plinius, Solinus, Ptolemaeus, Volaterranus, G. Mercator, and Ab. Ortelius » (van der Krogt 333 : 01)
Manuscript ownership inscription on the back of the title « au frère Célestin Pajot recolet du couvent de St Omer en 1786, né à Bapaume en 1764 »
Small dampstaining and small stains.
